Someone had brought the tip to Buffy, a nervous seeming young witch, maybe all of fifteen. She was on the run from a cabal of vampires and witches and shapeshifters that tried to force her to join them to help with some sort of end of the world plan and they wanted her to let a vampire drink from her to prove her commitment. She fled but she heard there was an amazing slayer here so she was hoping that Buffy would hear her out and not just kill her for being a witch, she promises she's not with them and to prove it she brought Buffy a lot of information to help her take them down.
They were stationed in New York but she didn't know where the main headquarters was, the one she had been taken to was what looked like an abandoned newspaper building in Queens. She would give Buffy the address. She would also say that everyone who had agreed to be part of this group, which they call Daybreak because they want to shatter the people who live in the daylight, all wear a design of a black flower over a sunrise, liked the flower is threatening to overtake the sun. But because it is NY the black flowers became a fashion statement so now lots of people not with the group are wearing black flowers too, but not with the sunrise.
Also and perhaps most concerning is that the vampires there are rumored to have a found a way to survive being out in the sun.
She was also able to give Buffy the names of a few members and where they were hanging out when they found her. There is a mall on long island called Roosevelt Field where they had first cornered her. The shill they got to pretend to befriend her is a vampire named Poppy North, if that is her real name, who told her in confidence that she had a vampire boyfriend but was also stringing along a human guy for fun. And the main enforcer who tried to kidnap the girl talking to Buffy was a shapeshifter who called herself Killer or something like that and she had a vampire and a witch for back up. She got the witch's name - Winnifreth Arlin - but not the vampire's name. They were recruiting in the food court mostly.
LaGuardia airport was crammed and busy, so maybe it wasn't a surprise to see at least one guy spotting one of those black flower over a sunrise marks. His was on a bracelet and the flower was a black rose. He looked about 19. He was on a cellphone as he walked past. "If she doesn't get them all killed this way I may kill her myself" he was growling into the phone as he passed. He was walking swiftly towards the baggage claim, if she wanted to catch up she would have to move fast.
If she went the other way instead she might spot a man who looked about the same age and wore the same design but was otherwise night and day. Where the first guy was dark and brooding in grungy clothes and could have been related to Angel. This guy was in a crisp three piece suit with neatly brushed hair. His black rose over sunrise emblem was on a necklace on a white gold chain. Clearly he was doing well financially. The young woman walking with him looked like a picture book generic secretary. She had her hair swept up in a perfectly neat twist, a pressed suit dress, small glasses on the tip off her nose. She wore a black foxglove over sunrise lapel pin. She was carrying a clipboard as if they were working as they walked towards their gate. And she had a Bluetooth earbud in one ear.
"Did Morgead land safely?" He was asking as they passed.
"Yes, my Lord. Johnson is already on her way from drop off to pickup to get him and bring him back to the Queens base for debrief before we return him to his SM." Unless she follows that's all she would hear from them.
Getting to New York was... well, less hassle that it could have been, but that didn't make it easy. Or maybe it was just that her and travel were semi-unmixy things? She'd need to think on that one. But the tip was... It gave her rumblings that made it feel like a bad idea to ignore it. So New York it was, and she was armed with whatever guidebooks she could find.
Looking very much the LA tourist to the city. It was a good cover, honestly. You wouldn't expect the bubbly out of towner in stylish yet affordable boots to be the secret badass vampire slayer now, would you?
LaGuardia was a hit to the sense, in more ways than one, and oh those Slayer senses were picking up a lot. She didn't follow the young looking one, even though there was a pull too. She went the other way.
... Well, if being a look a like to one of her exes was a sign, this one was big, neon one that kept flickering when she was trying to sleep. She'll play it causal, and follow them. Something was pinging her Slayer senses hard, and she needed to follow it through.
"Good," the man said easily, seemingly at ease and unaware that they were being followed. "I don't have to tell you how important keeping them safe is right now."
"I know, sir. They will all be kept safe until the end and after. We swear it. Are you certain that you don't want a larger escort going back to Vegas?"
"It is an overnight only, and she is gone now. We will be fine the two of us. Keeping the others safe until the final confrontation is far more important than my own safety."
"All the same but I am glad nothing is killing you as long as I am alive, sir."
He gave a small chuckle. "Oh, why?" He asked, amused.
"I won't have to be the one to tell Hannah if you die."
"Then we had best not die. We still clear?"
"Sir, I am a wolf, not a miracle worker. Too many scents here to be sure," she said quietly. "You need Keller for that."
Buffy couldn't help but overhear it all. Mostly because she was deliberately trying to overhear it all. Mind you, her way of following them... Good thing it was a busy airport, 'cause she would so be spotted anywhere else. Add to the mix of people hiding her visually, she was aware it was likely also hiding her scent.
Still gross, the whole scenting people thing.
Okay, so there two were looking to protect... someone? Something? A group of people? Either way, it was a protection deal and now they were going out to Vegas.
She did not have money for a last minute ticket on their plane to Vegas, and she was not doing the hide in the luggage compartment thing. ... She'll continue to tail them as long as she can. See if she can get any hints of where to go in NY.
The woman tapped her ear piece. "Lupe. Speak." She listened a moment then checked something on her tablet. "Johnson is waiting for you in the black car with three licence plate DYBRK3. She will take you to the... What? Is this really a good time to...? Fine," she sounded annoyed, "I'll ask." She turned to the man she was with. "Blackthorn wants to go to the mall before he is taken back to base. Do you authorize that?"
He nodded. "Tell Johnson he has my authorization to go to Roosevelt Field mall before going back to base."
"Very good, sir." Then clearly back to the call, "Lord Thierry approved the outing. Johnson can contact me if she does not take your word for it. Personally I recommend the Johnny Rockets at the food court. Alright. Unity." She tapped the earpiece again.
Well, they were organised, Buffy thought. They got all the stuff sorted, and authorising people to go to the mall - Roosevelt Field... If these two were heading for a plane, maybe she should go to the mall, follow that car type of thing.
Wasn't the worst idea in the world.
So this was Lord Thierry. She'll keep note of that.
If she got a move on, finding the Angel looking dood and following him to the car would be easy because he had gotten held up a baggage claim. He collected his one suitcase - dark green camo print, pretty beat up - and headed out to find the car waiting for him just ahead of the taxi pick up line.
Nice car, black and clean, good brand. Some one clearly has deep pockets. There was a sticker on the window that seemed out of place though. A blooming black lotus over a sunrise.
The dude she was following put his suitcase in the otherwise empty trunk, closed it, then got in the car, seemingly not in any rush.
As the car pulled away from the very sparkling sidewalks another car slid into place with a ride share light on. A window rolled down and a teenager with red frizzy hair looked at her. "Need a ride?"
Buffy did get a move on, moving quickly to find the Angel lookalike. Slayer speed could be very useful at times, she wasn't going to knock it. She sees him going to the car. Looks fancy, looks expensive. That sticker though... that was interesting.
"On a scale of one too I should be picking out a coffin, how scared should I be right now? Pretty sure you wouldn't think less of me if I said the guy that got into the car we are following looks like her could be part of a gang or something..."
Please excuse typos and other errors posting from my phone
